MGM, which is building a casino in Springfield, Massachusetts, has purchased the former central administration building of the city’s public schools.
MGM plans to redevelop the more than century-old building into 20-30 market rate apartments. Housing was originally to be part of the $950 million casino project, but had to be moved off-site to accommodate a redesign.
Springfield’s chief development officer Kevin Kennedy said the sales agreement gives MGM 18 months to redevelop the property.
" We have a great deal of confidence that this project will happen much sooner," said Kennedy.
The former school department headquarters building has been vacant for six years.
