More than 350 school superintendents, teachers, school board members and legislators attended Vermont Republican Governor Phil Scott's daylong education summit.
In opening remarks at Norwich University on Monday, Governor Scott said as an aging state Vermont on average has more than 1,000 fewer students every year, while education costs have grown faster than health care costs over the last 10 years. He says the rising costs are a long-term threat to the state's economy and education.
Some of the ideas generated by participants at the summit were to consolidate purchasing of supplies, possibly statewide, having some teachers have dual certification so they can teach in multiple fields, as well as attracting more business and people to Vermont.
