National Grid Awards $300K To County For Beech-Nut Plant Demolition

Demolition at a former baby food plant in upstate New York is one step closer to a start date.

National Grid has awarded Montgomery County $300,000 for demolition and remediation of buildings at the eastern side of the Beech-Nut site, located next to Exit 29 of the New York State Thruway.

County Executive Matthew Ossenfort tells the Amsterdam Recorder the demolition is expected to begin sometime this summer. Ossenfort says the grant boosts the county's bank roll for the project to nearly $1 million.

The county is aiming to demolish several buildings while exploring all options with the buildings on the western side of the site, which are considered more historic.

Ossenfort says the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is still negotiating the liability at the site.
