Massachusetts Congressman Richard Neal says he plans to speak with Governor Charlie Baker about how the federal government can help the hundreds of people who may lose their jobs when SABIC leaves Pittsfield.Speaking Monday in Springfield, Neal told WAMC he is happy to help where he can. He says much of the funding for job training programs comes from the federal government.
“It’s a contrast to the growth that has come in the Berkshires particularly in places like General Dynamics which continues to hire,” Neal said. “I think that this is a setback. I toured SABIC facility a couple of years ago. Those are very good jobs and are difficult to replace.”
SABIC employs some 300 people in Pittsfield. The Saudi-based company plans to leave that facility in the next year as it creates a regional headquarters in Houston.
