Northern New England Comparison In Electing Women

An analysis by The Associated Press finds that while women in the U.S. remain significantly underrepresented at all levels of elected office Vermont stands out for its state Legislature, Maine for longevity and New Hampshire for women in all levels of government.
In northern New England, Maine Republican Margaret Chase Smith spent more time in the U.S. Senate than any other Republican woman.

While Vermont has not sent any women to Washington, it ranks second in the percentage of women in the state Legislature. New Hampshire, meanwhile, has had female mayors, governors, state lawmakers and members of Congress. In 2012, it became the first state to elect an all-female Congressional delegation.
