The union representing nurses at the University of Vermont Medical Center is urging a state board to delay approving the medical center's budget until nurses have a new contract.
The request comes as the union and hospital resumed negotiations this week following a two-day nurses' strike.
The Green Mountain Care Board reviews hospital budgets.
Higher wages remain a sticking point in contract negotiations. The union wants a 23 percent pay increase over three years. The hospital has offered a 13 percent increase.
The union says the medical center provides high salaries for top executives to "attract and retain the skilled workforce necessary to provide high-quality and high-value care" but doesn't extend that logic to providers and support staff.
The board's chair didn't immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
