Central Hudson has been subpoenaed by the New York commission that's investigating the performance of utilities before and after Superstorm Sandy. Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Dave Lucas reports.
On November 13th Governor Andrew Cuomo established a Moreland Act Commission to investigate the response, preparation, and management of New York’s power utility companies in the wake of Hurricanes Sandy and Irene, and Tropical Storm Lee. At the height of Sandy, more than 2 million New Yorkers were without electricity. Restoration of service took days and sometimes weeks.
Central Hudson Gas & Electric, Orange and Rockland Utilities, National Grid and NYSEG are among those companies subpoenaed by the Commission.
Central Hudson spokesman John Maserjian says Central Hudson has had a lot of storm experience, subsequently has improved its infrastructure - and - is adequately prepared to handle extreme weather events. He says the company not only met, but exceeded expectations for power restoration during Sandy.
Spokesmen for Consolidated Edison, National Grid and the Long Island Power Authority confirmed their companies also received subpoenas. Con Ed issued a statement - quote -"We will cooperate with the Moreland Commission's request and look forward to discussing the company's storm preparations and response with . . . all interested parties".
National Grid spokesman Patrick Stella also promises cooperation. Letters requesting detailed information about the preparation and response of utilities were sent Thursday to the MTA and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Neither agency had anyone immediately available for comment. Peter Dean, Special Counsel for the commission, did not return calls for comment.
