New York's new mayor, Bill de Blasio, has taken the oath of office at a City Hall ceremony.

He was formally sworn in Wednesday by former President Bill Clinton as the city's 109th mayor.

De Blasio is the first Democrat to occupy City Hall in more than two decades and vows to pursue a sweeping liberal agenda for the nation's largest city.

He officially took over as mayor after a ceremony in his Brooklyn home minutes after midnight.

The 52-year-old de Blasio was joined by his wife and their two children. That oath was delivered by state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

The new mayor was elected by a record margin on the promise of being a sharp break from Michael Bloomberg, who leaves office after 12 years.
