Vermont Republican Governor Phil Scott's opioid coordination council discussed safe injection sites as a possible remedy to the ongoing opioid epidemic, but concluded they are not appropriate at this time.
The council did endorse greater investment by the state in syringe service programs. A safe injection site is a place where people who use heroin or other drugs could inject drugs under supervision to reduce the risk of death or serious injury from overdose.

The Rutland Herald reports Drug Prevention Policy Director Jolinda LaClair says the costs of creating a safe injection facility, alongside research challenges, led the council to conclude safe injection sites do not make sense for the state of Vermont at this time.
