Voter turnout is described as very light for a preliminary election for mayor today in the largest city in western Massachusetts.
Springfield Election Commissioner Gladys Oyola said it appears likely fewer than 10 percent of the city’s roughly 100,000 registered voters will cast ballots in today’s preliminary election before the polls close at 8pm.
" I am surprised at how low it is given the good weather and the advance notice voters have had," said Oyola
Mayor Domenic Sarno, seeking a fourth term, is on the ballot with five challengers. A seventh candidate announced a write-in campaign. Today’s top two vote getters advance to the November 3rd election ballot
There is also a preliminary election today for mayor in West Springfield, where three candidates are hoping to succeed Mayor Edward Sullivan, who is not running for a second term.
