Proposed Springfield Budget Includes Casino Payments

WAMC

The mayor of Springfield Massachusetts has proposed what he characterizes as a “ hold the line” budget for next year.

The $571.8 million dollar budget proposed by Mayor Domenic Sarno  preserves city jobs while raising spending by less than 2 percent.

Two of the city’s ten branch libraries would close, but library hours and staffing would increase elsewhere throughout the system.  The budget is balanced thanks to $5 million dollars from MGM Resorts that was part of a casino development deal. The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
