Vermont real estate dealers are touting a new study showing problems in Vermont's system for funding public schools, and are calling for changes.

The industry group Vermont Realtors on Tuesday unveiled the results of a study by Northern Economic Consulting, which found insufficient cost controls in Vermont's school funding system.

The group is urging two changes designed to give a larger number of local voters awareness of the costs when they vote for increased school spending.

In one, they want to reduce the state small-schools grant in hopes it would create an incentive for more schools to merge.

In a second change, they want to reduce the income level at which people's property taxes are capped, in hopes that more voters will feel the full costs of their spending decisions.
