Rodriguez Formally Appeals Suspension
The Major League Baseball Players Association formally appealed Alex Rodriguez's 211-game suspension. He was suspended through the 2014 season Monday when the league penalized 13 players following an investigation into Biogenesis of America, a Florida anti-aging clinic accused of distributing performance-enhancing drugs.
In the American League, the White Sox stunned the Yankees in 12 innings 6-5. A-Rod went one-for-five with a walk. Elsewhere, Stephen Drew's three-run homer in the top of the ninth lifted the Red Sox to a 7-5 victory over Houston last night. David Ortiz had four hits and Jonny Gomes hit a home run. The Red Sox have now won seven of their last nine games. Seattle bested Toronto 9-7. It was Detroit over Cleveland 6-5 in 14 innings. Kansas City beat Minnesota 5-2 and Texas cruised ahead of the Angels 10-3.
In the National League, Matt Harvey twirled a four-hit shutout for his first major league complete game in his 33rd start as the Mets blanked Colorado 5-0. Harvey is 9-3. He struck out six in his 106-pitch gem. Atlanta doubled up Washington 6-3. The Cubs topped Philadelphia 5-2. Pittsburgh beat Miami 4-2. The Dodgers crushed St. Louis 13-4 and Milwaukee defeated San Francisco 6-1.
Checking interleague play, Cincinnati outscored Oakland 6-5. Baltimore won against San Diego 10-3 and Tampa Bay fell to Arizona 9-8.
In golf, final preparations are being made for the last major of the year. The PGA Championship begins at Oak Hill in Rochester, N.Y.
In NASCAR, Tony Stewart remains in an Iowa hospital after breaking his leg in a race late Monday night.
In tennis, top-seeded Serena Williams easily won her opening match in the Rogers Cup, beating Italy's Francesca Schiavone 6-3, 6-2 in Toronto.
Finally at Saratoga Race Course, Bond Vigilante won the Claramount Stakes for trainer Chad Brown under jockey Jose Ortiz, paying $7.60 to win.
