A Republican candidate has pulled out of the race for a New York state Senate seat in the Hudson Valley.
Chairman of the Dutchess County Legislature Rob Rolison announced Monday he is withdrawing from the race for the 41st Senate District. In a statement, Rolison said the race has become more about personal attacks and character assassinations than the future of the state and Republican Party. He says this is not the environment in which he wishes to run for the chance to unseat Democratic Senator Terry Gipson. In February the Dutchess and Putnam County Republican committees had selected Rolison as their nominee. Three GOP hopefuls remain – Dutchess County Comptroller Jim Coughlan; City of Poughkeepsie Mayor John Tkazyik; and the latest entry, Dutchess County Legislator Sue Serino, who on May 16 said she is foregoing a previously announced assembly run against Democrat Didi Barrett to instead run for the state Senate.
