Shumlin Touts Improving Transparency Grade

Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin says a government website that features budget, contract, grant and other information has helped improve the state's grade for transparency.

An annual ranking by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group gave Vermont an A-minus for making government financial data accessible online. That's up from an F in 2010, the year before Shumlin took office.

But Shumlin also is making clear transparency has its limits. He won't release documents tied to the development of a financing plan for the universal health care system he wants to launch. And he won't release a full schedule including meetings with lobbyists as chairman of the Democratic Governors Association.

The report highlighted www.spotlight.vermont.gov , a website full of financial data maintained by the Department of Finance and Management.
