Sports Report: Sweet Sixteen Set, NCAA Men's Hockey Field Set

NCAA:

In men’s college basketball, the Sweet Sixteen is set, play starts on Thursday. On Friday Oklahoma beat UAlbany 69-60. Last night, No. 1 Duke beat No. 8 San Diego State 68-49, No. 1 Wisconsin topped No. 8 Oregon 72-65, No. 2 Gonzaga defeated No. 7 Iowa 87-68 and will play No. 11 UCLA on Friday. No. 7 Wichita State upset No.2 Kansas 78-65 and No. 7 Michigan State bested No. 2 Virginia 60-54.

In women’s college basketball, on Friday, Duke edged Albany 54-52. No. 1 South Carolina bested No. 8 Syracuse 97-68. No. 1 UConn is set to play against No.8 Rutgers tonight at 9 on ESPN2. The winner will play against No. 5 Texas on Saturday.

In men’s college hockey, Harvard beat out Colgate for the ECAC title, 4-2. Meanwhile the NCAA men’s ice hockey tournament has been set. On Friday, North Dakota will face Quinnipiac and it will be No. 3 Boston University against Yale. On Saturday, No. 1 MSU Mankato will play Rochester Institute of Technology, Omaha will face Harvard, and Denver will take on Boston College.

A Bloomsburg University baseball player has been dismissed from the team for an offensive Twitter post about Little League World Series star Mo'ne Davis.

The user account belonging to Joey Casselberry had been deactivated as of Saturday night, but screen captures of the tweet show that the player used an offensive word while criticizing news that a Disney Channel movie was being made about Davis.

Casselberry made reference to Davis' loss to Nevada during the LLWS.

Bloomsburg announced the dismissal of the junior first baseman on Twitter. The university in Pennsylvania said it was "deeply saddened" by the player's tweet.

Davis, from Philadelphia, was the first girl to earn a win and pitch a shutout in the LLWS last summer, and appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

In the NBA, Toronto beat New York 106-89, Detroit bested Boston in overtime 105-97, the Lakers defeated Philadelphia 101-87, Cleveland topped Milwaukee 108-90, Oklahoma City won against Miami 93-75, San Antonio beat Atlanta 114-95, the Clippers bested New Orleans 107-100, Denver topped Orlando 119-100, Sacramento defeated Washington 109-86, Charlotte won against Minnesota 109-98, and it was Phoenix over Dallas 98-92.

NHL:

Over on the ice, the Rangers skated over Anaheim 7-2, Tampa Bay beat Boston 5-3, Detroit edged St. Louis in overtime 2-1, and it was Vancouver over Arizona 3-1.

MLB:

In baseball spring training, the Mets blanked the Yankees 6-0, Milwaukee crushed the White Sox 13-4, Boston slid past Philadelphia 7-6, Washington tied Detroit 7-7, Kansas City doubled up San Francisco 4-2, Seattle shut out Texas 8-0, Colorado blanked Arizona 6-0, Cleveland doubled up the Dodgers 4-2, Cincinnati slid past Oakland 4-3, San Diego topped the Cubs 6-1, Houston humiliated Pittsburgh 14-2, and it as Toronto over Tampa Bay 3-0.

NFL:

Linebacker James Harrison has re-signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 36-year-old agreed to a two-year pact after having 5 ½ sacks last season in 11 games. The five-time Pro Bowler will be entering his 13th NFL season after spending the winter training in Arizona.

Tennis:

South African judge convicts former tennis champion Bob Hewitt of rape, sexual assault.

PGA:

Matt Every has successfully defended his Arnold Palmer Invitational crown by sinking an 18-foot birdie putt on 18 to beat Henrik Stenson at Bay Hill.

Every came from three shots behind Sunday with a 6-under 66 for a 13-under total.

Stenson had the lead heading into the round and owned a one-shot advantage with four holes to play before missing a 20-foot putt that would have forced a playoff.

It was the ninth straight tournament in which a 54-hole leader failed to win.

Regional:

The Times Union reports Scotia beat Greece Athena 54-49 to become the first Section II boy's basketball team to ever win consecutive titles.

UFC:

The New York Daily News is reporting UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rouseywill be in Albany today and tomorrow to push the state assembly to legalize MMA. All other 49 states have legalized the sport which has grown exponentially in recent years. She is also due to appear on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon" and "The View."
