Springfield City Council To Vote On Resolution Opposing Charter School Ballot Question

City Hall in Springfield, Ma

The Springfield City Council is expected to vote Monday on a resolution to oppose a state ballot question allowing for more charter schools in Massachusetts.

The resolution urges people to vote “ no” this November on Question 2, which if approved would lift a cap on charter schools allowing up to 12 more per year in Massachusetts.

Tim Collins, president of the teachers’ union in Springfield said more charter schools would not be a good thing.

" And they are not public schools. They are publicly funded privately run schools. There is no local influence on how they run and no local oversight," said Collins.

The Northampton City Council unanimously passed a resolution opposing Question 2.
