A number of Macy’s stores in the WAMC listening area are among 36 locations the company is closing across the country to save on costs.Macy’s stores in Kingston and Horseheads, NY, Enfield, CT as well as Lanesborough and Springfield, MA will start clearance sales January 11th. Closings are expected to happen within eight to 12 weeks.

The shuttering of the Lanesborough location and loss of 58 jobs is another blow for the Berkshire Mall. In October, anchor tenant Best Buy closed putting 63 people out of a job.
Macy’s says the move will save $400 million and is in response to disappointing sales in 2015. The company is opening a Bloomingdale’s in Norwalk, CT staffed by 200 workers in 2018.
