Springfield Mayor Dismisses Proposed Connecticut Casino As 'Glorified Slots Parlor'

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno on stage

Following a federal appeals court ruling, the mayor of Springfield, Massachusetts is downplaying the threat of competition for the MGM casino under construction in his city.

Reacting to the ruling upholding the dismissal of MGM’s lawsuit aimed at blocking construction of a casino just over the state line in Connecticut, Mayor Domenic Sarno said his focus is on putting “a first class resort establishment in Springfield.”

" By doing that in itself will downgrade any potential competition from what I understand, if it does go through, you are looking at a glorified slots parlor," Sarno said.

Two Native American tribes in Connecticut hope to build a casino to take customers away from the MGM casino that is scheduled to open in September 2018.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
