Environmental questions have led to a delay in state approval for a state-of-the-art manure processor and power generator proposed for St. Albans by Green Mountain Power.
The utility has suspended its application to the Vermont Public Service Board, citing additional time needed to make changes to the eFarm digester.
GMP's digester would turn cow manure into energy while removing much of the phosphorous from the compost.
The Burlington Free Press reports the goal of the project is to reduce phosphorous pollution in Lake Champlain, but regulators and concerned citizens are asking the utility to more thoroughly support its claims about the digester.
GMP spokeswoman Kristin Carlson says the utility's delay in securing a Certificate of Public Good for the facility will likely take one month.
