Study Says Marijuana Legalization Could Mean Big Bucks For Vermont

A new study says legalizing marijuana in Vermont could produce millions in tax revenue if no other nearby states also allow it.

The Rand Corporation released a study Friday of what legalization could mean for the state.

The study says legalization could generate up to $75 million a year in tax revenue. That figure assumes marijuana tourism and illicit exports because nearly 40 times as many marijuana consumers live within 200 miles of the state's borders than live in Vermont.

But the revenues are not assured because the federal government could intervene and other nearby states could also legalize marijuana.

Governor Peter Shumlin has said Vermont should eventually legalize marijuana, but he wants to learn from the experiences of the state of Washington and Colorado first.
