Two Vermont Towns Oppose Development Inspired By Mormon Leader

Voters in two small Vermont towns have opposed a massive development by a Utah businessman that would be based on the papers of Mormon leader Joseph Smith.
David Hall has been buying land near Smith's birthplace in Sharon, Vermont, to build — years in the future — an economically, ecologically and socially sustainable development with housing for 20,000 people. He has said the community wouldn't be based on religion and would be open to anyone.

On Town Meeting Day voters in Tunbridge and Royalton voted overwhelmingly against the idea. Sharon and Strafford are considering similar proposals.

Organizers of the Town Meeting Day votes had wanted to gauge residents' feelings on the project and send a message to the developer.
