University Of Vermont Receives $1M Gift For STEM Center

The University of Vermont says it's received its first major private gift. It will be used to build a new science center on campus.

The commitment to make a $1 million gift came from 1966 graduate Richard Barrett and his wife Elaine. It was announced Thursday by the UVM Foundation.

Barrett and his Barrett Foundation are based in Boulder, Colorado.

UVM's is planning a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics center. It includes new construction and the remodeling of existing facilities.

The project is expected to cost $104 million. The Burlington Free Press reports the school must raise at least $26 million without debt.

UVM President Tom Sullivan says the university is grateful for the support.
