UUP President Phil Smith Opposes Paterson Higher Education Proposal

Albany, NY – Teacher's unions are not pleased with New York Governor David Paterson's proposed budget, and its effects on higher education in the state. Organizations like United University Professions and New York State United Teachers specifically take issue with the Public Higher Education Empowerment and Innovation Act proposed by Paterson. The governor says the legislation would bring the state university system in line with other public colleges, and help avoid big tuition hikes. SUNY campus presidents support the proposal, but leaders at UUP and NYSUT say it's an attempt to privatize education, and take the state out of it.
