A geologist in Vermont is gathering data to help build a 3-D map of the ground underneath Bennington to try to understand how the potentially cancer causing chemical PFOA may be moving through groundwater.
Department of Environmental Conservation geologist Jon Kim has been taking a look at geological formations on town properties to better understand what's happening underground.
Vermont Public Radio reports Kim is working with other scientists who can look inside wells to measure where water is flowing and at what rate. When they're done, Kim says they'll have a 3-D map of the bedrock aquifer beneath Bennington.
PFOA, or perfluorooctanoic acid, has been linked to health issues such as liver and testicular cancer. It has been detected in more than 250 private wells around Bennington.
