Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin says his colleagues across the nation who say they won't allow Syrian refugees into their states are "stomping on the qualities that make America great."
Governor Shumlin says there is an extensive screening process in place for refugees and he has faith in the process.
Several governors say they've temporarily halted acceptance of Syrian refugees following the deadly terror attacks in Paris, but advocates say states don't have authority to block refugee resettlement.
Amila Merdzanovic, of the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program, says there are currently no Syrian refugees in Vermont, but there are plans for some to come this year.
Shumlin says the Syrians are fleeing horrific violence and war and "the question we should be asking is how can we help."
