Cancer is forcing a Vermont State Police dog into an earlier retirement, but his handler doesn't have to worry about medical expenses thanks to a special fund set up for police K-9s.
Trooper David Roos told The Burlington Free Press that he thought Quincy, a 5-year-old German shepherd, had a sinus infection when he started having nosebleeds earlier this month. But it turned out to be bone cancer, and Quincy now faces radiation and chemotherapy.
The costs will be covered by Lacey's Fund, which was created in 2008 by Shelburne residents Kirk and Loretta Walters after the death of their dog. While Lacey was not a police dog, the couple wanted to honor her by helping retired police dogs.
