Vermont Maple Sugar Makers Off To Slow Start

Vermont sugar makers say that cold temperatures have slowed maple season this year.

Charlie Robb Jr. of the Robb Family Farm tells the Brattleboro Reformer that sap doesn't flow unless temperatures peak at the 40s and drop to the 20s at night.

Vermont Maple Sugar Makers' Association Executive Director Matthew Gordon says the season is slightly delayed in comparison to recent years, but the state could still have traditional spring temperatures soon.

The National Weather Service issued a report stating that record low temperatures were set in Burlington and Montpelier on Monday — 8 below and 13 below, respectively. Last week, a strong snow storm barreled through Vermont that swept cold temperatures across the state with highs in the low 20s and lows dipping to single digits.
