The Vermont Secretary of State and Vermont Attorney General are jointly warning municipal officials in the state about an email scam.
On Tuesday morning an email mimicking the official Vermont Secretary of State’s account was sent to some Vermont officials soliciting donations claiming that 3 year old Linda is suffering from a rare disease and desperately needs help.

Vermont officials believe the scam targeted municipal officials because their email addresses are publicly available.

IT specialists at the Secretary of State’s office traced the origin of the email to Nigeria. It then bounced off of a Godaddy server hosted in Singapore.

The Vermont Attorney General has referred the scam email to the Vermont cyber-crimes unit of the FBI.
