The state of Vermont is providing $375,000 to five community action agencies for fuel assistance grants to help low-income Vermonters stay warm this winter.
Department of Children and Families Commissioner Ken Schatz says the money will help about 1,500 households to buy up to $250 in home heating fuel.
The grants will be available to households that have exhausted their seasonal and crisis fuel grants, have incomes at or below 185 percent of the federal poverty level, and at least one household member who is age 60 or older, disabled or under the age of 6.
Schatz said Thursday that the extra grants will help make sure that low-income residents, who are struggling to stay warm, do it safely, and don't have to use costly electric space heaters.
