Ten months after two sons of the founder of Burton Snowboards caused an accidental fire that gutted a popular, historic stone cabin on a Vermont mountain top, the structure has been rebuilt and will soon be ready for guests.
The state-owned stone hut is rented out by lottery in the winter and is accessible by a chairlift at Stowe Mountain Resort.
Police say Jake Burton Carpenter asked his sons to get the cabin prepared for a friend on Dec. 23 by stoking a fire in the wood stove. They placed wood against the stove to dry and left the stove door open with a log against it before leaving.
The guest didn't show up, and the hut caught fire.
Carpenter and his family donated $150,000 to the restoration. The cabin is expected to be open Dec. 1.
