Vermont School District To Bring In Heroin Antidote

A Vermont school district has voted to move forward to bring a heroin overdose antidote into its schools.

The Hartford School Board on Wednesday voted in favor of drafting procedures in the next three months giving school district nurses and other staff naloxone, marketed under the name Narcan.

The Valley News reports the cost of keeping Narcan is estimated to be about $100 per year.

School Board member Paul Keane pushed for bringing the drug to Hartford schools last November.

His colleagues rejected the idea though due to liability concerns and reports that patients could become combative after being revived with Narcan.

A 2013 state survey found that 2 percent of Vermont students reported they had tried heroin.
