The state of Vermont is asking a court to approve a settlement it reached with a company over contamination of some private water wells with the chemical PFOA.
Under the agreement announced in July, Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics will pay $20 million to extend municipal waterlines to about 200 homes in the Bennington area. As part of the deal, Vermont's lawsuit was dropped.
Department of Environmental Conservation attorney Matt Chapman tells Vermont Public Radio that about six people opposed the proposal during a 30-day comment period.
He says the conclusion reached after a year-and-a-half of negotiation "represents the best interests of both the State of Vermont and the community."
PFOA has been linked to certain types of cancer. In Vermont, it was used at a now-closed plant in North Bennington.
