The Vermont attorney general says Dollar Tree Stores, Inc. will pay the state $42,500 in a settlement of a lawsuit alleging that it sold jewelry that the state says contains toxic substances.
The attorney general's office said Tuesday that the national discount chain has agreed to keep all jewelry off its shelves in Vermont.
The state sued the Virginia company in July alleging that it violated a 2010 settlement with the state to stop selling the jewelry.
The attorney general said the items contained high amounts of lead and cadmium in violation of Vermont law. The office said Dollar Tree sold 30,000 pieces of jewelry through stores in Barre, Bennington, Burlington, Derby/Newport and Rutland.
A Dollar Tree spokesman said the company had no comment on the settlement.
