Officials in a Vermont town have hired a construction company to start working on a $5.5 million municipal water system.

The system will eventually become the water source for customers in Berlin who are currently served by the privately owned Berlin Water Company.

The project will require the installation of nearly 6 miles of line to distribute water from three town-owned wells. It has been in the planning phase since 2007, officials say, and has finally secured enough federal funding and financial support from property owners.

The project manager told The Times-Argus that construction will continue into the fall.
