Governor Peter Shumlin and members of Vermont's congressional delegation say a $37 million federal education grant is designed to ensure that all Vermont children will be ready to succeed when they get to school.
Shumlin, Senator Bernie Sanders, U.S. Representative Peter Welch and a representative of Senator Patrick Leahy said Monday the goal of the Early Learning Race to the Top Grant is to expand awareness of the importance of early education, increase participation in an early learning program and focus services on high-needs children.
Shumlin said Vermont children will benefit immediately from these programs. The state will benefit long into the future with a better educated workforce, more high-quality early childhood opportunities, and an accessible range of health, education and developmental services.
The grant was announced last week.
