A key Vermont lawmaker is expressing frustration that there's no way to know whether, and to what extent, a law on bias-free policing passed two years ago is being implemented.
The House Judiciary Committee heard Thursday from representatives of the Vermont State Police, municipal police chiefs and county sheriffs on what they're doing to ensure their officers guard against racial or ethnic bias in their work.
Washington County Sheriff Sam Hill told the panel his office doesn't enter data on the race of people stopped for alleged traffic offenses. Hill said he lacks the staff and resources to do that.
Judiciary Committee Chairman Bill Lippert complained that there is no reliable statewide data on how well the bias-free policing law is being implemented.
