Vermont is seeing a reduction in demand for its main welfare-to-work program, with a resulting savings to the state budget of about $571,000.
Finance and Management Commissioner Jim Reardon says a mid-year budget adjustment bill expected to be approved by a House committee this week is expected to reflect that reduction from what had been budgeted for the current fiscal year for the state's Reach Up program.
More than 200 of the roughly 6,500 families that had been getting state assistance while their main breadwinner tried to get into the workforce have graduated from the program without being replaced by new households coming into the program.
The reduction in demand has been felt since the 2014 fiscal year started in July.
