WAMC Morning Edition Sports Update
In the NBA, the Lakers are mourning the loss of longtime owner Jerry Buss yesterday at the age of 80. Buss had been diagnosed with cancer but according to his assistant the immediate cause of death was kidney failure. During his nearly 34 years in charge, the Lakers made the NBA Finals 16 times. Magic Johnson tweeted, "He was a great man and incredible friend."
In the NHL, Philadelphia shut out the NY Islanders 7-0. Claude Giroux and Danny Briere netted two goals each.
Ottawa doubled up New Jersey 2-1 in double overtime. Colorado beat Nashville 6-5. Montreal defeated Carolina 3-0. Toronto topped Florida 3-0 and Anaheim slid past Columbus 3-2.
Checking top 25 college basketball, No. 13 Kansas St. beat West Virginia 71-61 and 25th ranked Notre Dame defeated No. 20 Pittsburgh 51-42.
In top 25 women’s college basketball, No. 1 Baylor beat third-ranked UConn 76-70 and eighth-ranked Kentucky edged ahead of No. 10 Texas A&M 70-66.
Tampa Bay defensive end Da'Quan Bowers was arraigned Monday on charges of criminal possession of a weapon and posted $10,000 bond.
Derek Jeter received an ovation that could be heard throughout Steinbrenner Field when he jogged onto the diamond for the New York Yankees' first full-squad workout . Jeter took part in most of the team drills, including on-field batting practice for the first time since undergoing ankle surgery last October.
