Albany, NY – Well with the first pick in the 2011 NBA Draft last night, Cleveland selected Duke guard Kyrie Irving.

Rounding out the Top 5 picks... Minnesota took Arizona forward Derrick Williams, Utah drafted Turkish big man Enes Kanter, Cleveland selected Texas forward Tristan Thompson, and Toronto took Lithuanian center Jonas Valanciunas.

Picks of regional interest... U-Conn guard Kemba Walker went at nine to Charlotte, Sacramento traded up to draft Glens Falls native and AP National Player of the Year Jimmer Fredette at 10, the Knicks took Georgia Tech guard Iman Shumpert at 17, the Celtics took Providence guard Marshon Brooks at 25 and Purdue guard E'twaun Moore at 55, the Nets drafted Purdue forward JaJuan Johnson at 27 and Maryland center Jordan Williams at 36.

In other NBA news, Lakers forward Ron Artest has filed a petition in Los Angeles Superior Court, seeking to legally change his name to Metta World Peace.

To the diamond... In Queens, Chris Capuano scattered five hits over six scoreless innings, as the Mets dumped Oakland 4-1.

Elsewhere, Washington blanked Seattle 1-0, San Francisco edged Minnesota 2-1, Arizona slipped past Kansas City 5-3, and St. Louis hammered Philadelphia 12-2.

In other baseball news... Saying "I'm too old to be disrespected," 58-year-old Jim Riggleman stepped down as the Nationals manager after the club informed him that it would not discuss a new contract.

At Wimbledon, just weeks after winning the French Open, Li Nah was bounced in three sets by Sabine Lisicki.

On the Men's side, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Robin Soderling breezed into round 3.

And in NHL news, the Flyers have traded Jeff Carter to Columbus for Jake Voracek and the club's first and third round picks. Philly also traded captain Mike Richards to the Kings for Brayden Schenn, Wayne Simmonds and a draft pick.
