Private wells in southwestern Vermont are being tested for a substance suspected of causing cancer.
State officials are testing every private well within a 1.5 mile radius of the former ChemFab plant in North Bennington.
Vermont Public Radio reports that Vermont officials have said Perfluorooctanoic acid was found in some of the village's water samples. The chemical was once used to help make non-stick materials.
Well tests are expected to take two weeks. Though the village's municipal water supply is safe to drink, those with a well near the plant shouldn't drink their water until the results come back.
The company that last owned the now-closed plant is providing bottled water to those affected by contaminated water that occurred as a result of the facility.
