Wildlife Officials Celebrating Strong Salmon Run

Timothy Knepp, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Vermont wildlife officials say the Winooski River is experiencing another strong run of landlocked Atlantic salmon.

Officials  say the increased numbers are a testament to cooperative efforts between the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to restore the native fish to Lake Champlain.

Efforts by Burlington Electric Department and Green Mountain Power to transport salmon past three dams have expanded salmon fishing opportunities and allowed salmon to complete their annual spawning run up the river, further supporting the restoration of salmon in Lake Champlain.

Officials were celebrating the event Thursday afternoon in Winooski.
