The Capitol Connection

Thursdays 3:00 p.m., Saturdays at 5:30 a.m.

Maybe you voted for them and maybe you didn't, but either way, what they do and how they think affects you. Each week on The Capitol Connection, you can keep yourself abreast of political developments and gain a little insight into how New York State's politicians think when you listen in as political scientist Dr. Alan Chartock holds conversations with members from the Assembly and Senate, and other political movers and shakers.

Provocative topics, tough questions, spontaneity, and a casual low-key format make The Capitol Connection one of WAMC's most listened-to offerings. Tune in Thursdays at 3 PM, Saturdays at 5:30 AM. and Tuesdays at 6:30 PM on HD2 on WAMC Northeast Public Radio. The program is also carried on stations across New York State. Check your local listings for the time and frequency.

A late state budget was once an annual occurrence in Albany, much like the Tulip Festival, but that tradition came to an end when New York Governor Andrew Cuomo took office. There have been four on-time budgets since 2011. That streak could be in jeopardy this year as the governor is putting his demands for ethics reform in the state budget. On WAMC's Capitol Connection this week, State Comptroller Democrat Thomas DiNapoli told Alan Chartock what a late budget could mean for the state.

U.S. Attorney Preet Bhara said Thursday that New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver traded his influence to amass millions of dollars in graft. Silver, a Manhattan Democrat who has run the Assembly for two decades, was arrested and faces up to 100 years in prison if convicted on all counts. At issue is Silver’s outside income as a lawyer, earned on top of his $121,000 salary as speaker. Over the years, Silver has been a frequent guest on WAMC’s Capitol Connection with Alan Chartock. The outside income issue came up during a 2010 show, recorded during negotiations over an ethics bill with then-Governor David Paterson.
