In 1967 Joey Bishop, the celebrated comedian and honorary member of Sinatra’s Rat Pack, starred in a film entitled “A Guide for the Married Man.” Although this is hardly a distinguished movie, one scene was worth the price of admission.

One year has passed since veteran police officer Kevin Ambrose was shot and killed in Springfield Massachusetts.  It had been more than 25 years since a Springfield police officer had died in the line of duty.  Springfield Police Commissioner William Fitchet  is asking people everywhere today to show support for police by putting on a blue light or placing a blue ribbon on a tree or a pole.   WAMC”s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with the aide to the commissioner,  Police Sergeant John Delaney

All of the seats on Plattsburgh’s Common Council and the Mayor’s position are open in this year’s election.  On Monday, city Republicans introduced their line up of candidates for each of the seats in City Hall.

Andrew Cuomo's office kicked-started the day by spreading word that the Governor had published an op-ed in The Huffington Post titled "Restoring New York as a Leader in Women's Rights.” The timing seems right: women's groups are rallying this noonhour at the State Capitol in Albany, on the heels of Cuomo's mid-morning press event the 10-point "Women's Equality Act" which includes strengthening abortion rights in New York.

A good government group in New York is concerned about some of the lobbying activities of the parent company of the Indian Point nuclear power plant. To this end, the group is urging a state commission on ethics to investigate. Meanwhile, an Indian Point spokesman says the plant’s parent is operating within the law.

Officials are warning that the recent wet weather in the Northeast could have an effect on the amount of mosquitoes, and precautions are being taken to control the risk of disease that could be passed on to people and animals.

I recently offered commentary on THE COMPANY YOU KEEP, the Robert Redford film which spotlights various now-aging political activists of the late 1960s and 70s. To be sure, THE COMPANY YOU KEEP is dramatically flawed, but at least it attempts to get at certain truths regarding the American counterculture of the era.

On the evening of Saturday, June 15, the Berkshire Bach Society will present violinist Joe Silverstein in concert for a celebratory event in honor of his 80th birthday.
