Governor Andrew Cuomo was in the Adirondacks this weekend to show off the state’s recent acquisition. The governor hopes the lands will be a boon to the local tourist economy, but some local officials say the losses from the hunting and forestry industry outweigh any potential tourism benefits.

Public health officials in Massachusetts and a non-profit provider of mental health and substance abuse treatment are working to reduce underage drinking in the state’s third largest city.  A prevention plan has been  developed based on the results of a survey of 8th graders in Springfield to determine reasons for underage drinking.   WAMC”s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill reports.

With the election of a U.S. president much in the news, one soon-to-be-released film takes on extra-special resonance. That film is HYDE PARK ON HUDSON, which was screened at the Toronto Film Festival and is scheduled to open theatrically in December.

The pink ribbon has been an incredibly successful piece of marketing for breast cancer research. For cancer survivor Leonor Caraballo, it's supremely annoying. She always hated the color pink. She wanted to come up with a symbol that she didn’t find infantilizing. Caraballo is a new media artist who collaborates with her husband, Abou Farman, under the name caraballo-farman. The couple started making bronze models of real tumors, created from MRI scans, that you can wear around your neck or put on your desk.

After sparring at a distance for almost a year through campaign events and advertising, the two candidates for US Senate in Massachusetts met  face to face Thursday night. No attacks were spared in the hour long broadcast debate.   WAMC”s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill reports

   Republican Incumbent US Senator Scott Brown questioned Democratic challenger’s Elizabeth Warren’s character, saying she had been dishonest in claiming to be of Native American heritage. He said the policies she advocates would result in a crushing jobs killing tax burden.

The leader of the U.S. House confirmed Thursday that the Farm Bill will not be addressed until after the November election.  That concerns farmers across the region, because the bill and provisions crucial to the dairy industry expire at the end of this month.

In his ongoing effort to reduce a projected multimillion-dollar budget deficit for 2013, Dutchess County Executive MarcMolinaro is capping the amount of sales tax revenue distributed to its municipalities at $25 million. Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Dave Lucas reports

Dutchess county was projected to share $29.5 million this year. But the County Executive intends to drive down the overall cost of government.

That initiative powers Marc Molinaro's 2013 budget proposal, aimed at starting a multi-year transformation of Dutchess County Government.
