WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Casino Revenue In State Budget Questioned

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and legislative leaders are betting voters don’t repeal the state’s casino law.   Casino revenue was included in the 2015 state budget, but the impact of the decision appears to be more political than financial.

Gov. Patrick does not see it as much of a gamble to speculate on $73 million in projected casino revenue in a budget that totals $ 36.5 billion. The casino cash may never come if voters repeal the state’s casino law in November.

Sean Philpott: She Ain't Heavy, She's My Brother

Actress Laverne Cox made history last week when she was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress for her role on the hit show "Orange is the New Black." Ms. Cox is the first openly transgender actress to receive an Emmy nomination. While Hollywood has been increasingly open to portraying transgendered individuals in a positive light -- such as Jarod Leto's Oscar-winning turn last year a transgendered woman in Dallas Buyers Club -- even the progressive entertainment industry falls prey to the stereotype that transgendered people are just men or women in drag. That the Emmy's nominating committee made a point to nominate Laverne Cox as an actress is a welcome change.

Bus Crash That Killed Teen Brings Calls For Increased Safety

A crash earlier this month that killed a teenage boy in the Adirondacks has brought calls on New York state government to increase oversight of the rafting and tubing industries. 

The crash that killed 15-year-old tubing guide Hunter Scofield on July 5th in Lake Luzerne is still under state police investigation, and many are now working to prevent similar accidents.
