WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

David Nightingale: Considering Oliver Sacks

In his book “The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat” Oliver Sacks decribes how a patient with agnosia – or one who couldn't recognize faces – (quote) “reached out his hand … and took hold of his wife's head.. [and] tried to lift it off, to put [the hat] on...”

I mention Dr Sacks, a Professor of Clinical Neurology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, as one more in the genre of scientist/artists, like Alexander Borodin or Richard Feynman.

Hillary Clinton Talks Global Leadership, Shutdown At Hamilton College

On Friday Former Secretary of State and Former U.S. Senator of New York Hillary Clinton spoke at Hamilton College before a crowd of nearly 6,000. WAMC’s Lucas Willard caught up with Keshia Clukey, Education Reporter for the Utica Observer-Dispatch, who attended the event.

Gun Buyback To Be Held In Western Massachusetts

A first-ever gun buy-back is taking place Saturday in two mostly rural counties in western Massachusetts—Hampshire and Franklin counties.  People will have  chance to dispose of guns at the police stations in Northampton and Greenfield from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.     WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Northwestern District Attorney David Sullivan, whose office organized the gun buy-back.
