WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

U.S. Attorney, EPA Sue Westchester Over Safe Drinking Water Act

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Attorney are suing Westchester County for alleged violations of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act.

The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and the EPA filed the civil lawsuit against Westchester, alleging that the county’s Water District Number 1 fails to fully treat a significant portion of its water for the parasite cryptosporidium. Ned McCormack is a spokesman for County Executive Rob Astorino.

New York Fails Common Core

New York is the second state to test students under the new Common Core standards, which require more writing, critical thinking and problem-solving. In the first results, students scores plummeted.

Back in April, when the New York State United Teachers thought Common Core testing was a risky experiment, the union launched an unsuccessful attempt to stop the exams from being given. NYSUT President Dick Iannuzzi said then that challenges were in store for both teachers and students and that schools weren't prepared to teach to the new standards.

U.S. House Speaker Meets Protests Outside Congressional Fundraiser In Sullivan County

U.S. House Speaker John Boehner headlined a fundraiser for New York Congressman Chris Gibson Tuesday evening. The Sullivan County event drew about 75 protestors, who gathered to tell the two Republicans that their votes are hurting working families.

Herbert London: Raising The Flag At Ground Zero

There was a moment after 9/11 when almost all Americans realized what could be lost to an enemy intent on destroying our people and our institutions. As time has passed, so too has much of this sentiment. Americans may be patriotic, but patriotism is generally not in the forefront of their thinking. There are, however, some Americans who consider any form of patriotic expression jingoism or misguided public sentiment.
