WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

MassDEP Releases Updated Waste Management Master Plan

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has released its updated Solid Waste Master Plan, which aims to increase recycling and reduce the amount of trash sent to landfills. But some aspects of the plan remain controversial among environmentalists.

The new master plan released this week has a goal of reducing waste in Massachusetts 30 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050. The plan will focus on controlling food waste, increasing recycling, and looking to new technologies to eliminate waste and reducing the toll on the state’s landfills.

Rosie's Law Would Allow Judges To Decide On Witnesses' Use Of Facility Dogs

Two New York state lawmakers from the Hudson Valley are behind legislation that would grant judges greater leeway to permit facility dogs in the courtroom in an effort to help certain witnesses through difficult testimony.

Freshman Democratic state Senator Terry Gipson is sponsoring Rosie’s Law, named for the first assistance dog allowed by a New York court to accompany a witness during testimony. In this case, Rosie accompanied a girl known as Jessica during the proceedings, in a child and sexual abuse case, in Gipson’s district. Here’s Gipson.

Schumer Wants Answers About CH Energy/Fortis Deal

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer was in the Hudson Valley Friday. New York’s senior Senator says without answers to questions he has raised for some time, he cannot support a proposed utility merger in the Hudson Valley. As he was voicing his concerns, a pair of administrative law judges released a recommended decision about the merger.

The proposed merger is between Canadian energy company Fortis and Poughkeepsie-based CH Energy Group, parent of Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation. And the Democratic Schumer says he has serious concerns.
