The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. The Department of Homeland Security is including in its 2014 budget a request for a feasibility study to charge people to cross the border.  Tourism, business and legislative interests in New York’s north country say the idea could harm economic ties between the U.S. and Canada.

The NYS Assembly's Barrett Talks About Year One In Office

New York State Assemblymember Didi Barrett recently completed her first year in office. The Democrat, who represents a section of the Hudson Valley, spoke with WAMC’s Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne about what she has accomplished so far and what is yet to come.

Barrett represents the 106th Assembly District, which includes portions of Columbia and Dutchess Counties.

She says she has been working on educating her colleagues about the Hudson Valley.

For law enforcement officials and counter-terror experts this radical view that inspired their heinous act is a conundrum. Tedisco: Give Voters Recall Power

Republicans in the New York state Assembly have a plan they say will help to root out the corruption scandals that have tainted the state legislature in recent weeks. They are calling for a constitutional amendment to allow recall elections in New York for all statewide elected officials, and members of the state legislature. Assembly Republican Jim Tedisco from the Capital Region joined in the announcement Wednesday morning.

For a constitutional amendment to become law, it must pass the legislature in two consecutive sessions , and be approved by the voters.

Democratic Senate Candidates Drop The Gloves In Final Debate

U.S. Representative Edward Markey and U.S. Representative Stephen Lynch held a fiery debate in Springfield one week before the April 30 primary for Senate.

With just a week remaining before the primaries in the special election for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts the two Democratic candidates held a debate in Springfield last night that was punctuated with heated rhetoric. 

The two veteran U.S. Representatives, Stephen Lynch and Edward Markey, argued bitterly over their Congressional voting records on issues ranging from homeland security to health care to the bailout of the automobile industry. Markey accused Lynch of personal attacks and deliberate distortions, while Lynch at one point called Markey a “liar.”
